Helping Young People Develop Porn Literacy

These days, most parents are concerned about pornography: Are my kids watching it? How much? What kind? Most importantly, how is pornography affecting their ideas—about men, women, sexuality, and relationships?

This state-of-the art talk examines how internet pornography influences young people, what they need from adults, and how we can provide it to them. It also reassures parents caught in the grip of today’s PornPanic, which predicts that porn will damage their kids’ brains, distort their sexuality, and destroy their ability to have relationships. While internet porn has certainly made things more complicated, they aren’t nearly as bad as some doomsayers insist.

In addition to a lively, entertaining presentation, you also get an honest, down-to-earth question and answer session. Together, they cover topics including:

  • What is Porn Literacy? How do I help my kids develop it?
  • Why not just tell kids to stay away from porn?
  • When—and how—should I start raising this issue with my children?
  • Realistically, what should parents be concerned about? What do we not need to worry about?
  • What if my partner and I disagree about how to parent on this subject?
  • What about sexting?
  • What’s the one thing parents can tell kids of almost any age that will help them thrive regardless of their contact with internet porn?

I’ll include information I’ve gathered from interviewing performers, collaborating with educators and neuroscientists, counselling consumers and their mates, and, as a 30-year resident of Silicon Valley, the thousands of hours I’ve spent with the technical people who make the computers and software we use every day.

The good news is that parents are still the most important sex educators of their kids. With lots of practical examples, this fast-paced talk will help you fulfill that role more easily, more effectively, and with a lot less aggravation for both you and your kids.
