“F-Word” Indecency

“F-word.” “F— you.” Do you know what these expressions mean? Of course you do. Everyone over the age of 10 does. And yet the American mass media continue to use these infantile symbols when they want to refer to someone using the word fuck. U.S. News & World Report is the latest grownup magazine to coyly play it both ways. In this week’s article on how John McCain’s “sharp tongue could affect the [presidential] race,” they noted he was reported telling Senator John Cornyn “F— you.” Later in the story, they reminded us that three years ago, Vice-President Cheney “famously…

“Morality in Media” Gets Airsick

Ever been on an airplane and felt the movie was too sexy? Me neither. And yet Morality in Media, those sex-obsessed people who want to limit your choices so that they feel more comfortable, are championing the cause of a single individual who complained about this. A guy on a Delta flight complained that “Rome” wasn’t edited enough for him or anyone else, and now MiM has found their shock-du-jour. Delta has promised to edit any sexy scenes down to three seconds or less, but this merely inflames MiM even more. Says MiM president Robert Peters, “To put that in…

Virginia Protects People From Themselves, Not From Gunmen

There will always be depressed, suicidal, and psychotic people among us. No democratic country can completely shelter us from the occasional outbreak of mental illness we saw in Blacksburg 10 days ago. But a disturbed man was able to fire 170 shots in 9 minutes. He could only do that by owning a special kind of gun that holds special ammunition. The Virginia legislature should be ashamed that it hasn’t protected Virginians from these weapons of mass destruction. What have local legislators been doing to protect Virginians? * Passing legislation to limit where adult bookstores can locate * Limiting the…

As Our Orange Tree Sighs After Sex Again

April 15 is a day of pain for most Americans, but at my house, it’s a day of looking out the window and seeing sex. Although our orange trees create fruit all year round, mid-April is when the oranges get sweet enough to make juice every morning. And mid-April is when our plum and apricot trees show their tiny little green fruits, making their annual journey to summertime lushness. And mid-April is when our bright red tulips come out of the ground and preen, shaming the simpler yellow daffodils that have already come and gone. Mid-April is when the freesia…

Sex Offenders? Torture & Hanging Are Next

Ohio wants to be the first state to require sex offenders and child predators to have special fluorescent license plates. The reason is the same old excuse behind the rest of the billion-dollar let’s-segregate-the-molesters industry: “helping families make informed decisions for themselves and their children,” as State Senator Keven Coughlin of Cuyahoga Falls says. Decisions about what? “Quick, change lanes, we don’t want to be behind a molester.” “Honey, don’t wear that belly blouse and mini-skirt outside, there’s a molester’s car parked across the street.” I’m still trying to get data on other laws that publicly tag molesters after they’re…

Airport Scanner Discovers Familiar Truth

The country’s first full-body scanning machine has been installed in the Phoenix airport. Used in secondary screening, it automatically looks through passengers’ clothing for guns and explosives. If the phone booth-size thing works out, it will soon appear in New York, L.A., and other airports. [Note to younger readers: a “phone booth” is where folks used to go to have the private conversations we no longer have.] Some people are fine with the new machine, enjoying the illusion of increased security. But others, of course, feel upset that the people operating the machines can “see” their bodies. According to The…
