Pope: Homosexuality As Environmental Disaster

Pope Benedict XVI took another step in articulating his fantasies about human beings this week. In criticizing relationships he doesn’t accept, he fretted: That which has come to be expressed and understood with the term ‘gender’ effectively results in man’s self-emancipation from nature and from the Creator. It is necessary to have something like an ecology of man. It is not outdated metaphysics when the Church speaks of the nature of the human being as man and woman, and asks that this natural order be respected. The Church should defend not just the earth, water and air as gifts of…

Seven Consecutive Days of Sex? Surely, God’s Ambivalent

Sexless marriages and intimate relationships in which sex has declined in frequency and quality are big business these days. A discouraged couple has an unlimited choice of seminars, pills, books, retreats, addictionologists, Bible study, chiropractic, yoga, and therapy. As a bonus, every week or two there’s advice from Oprah. She gags on the word vagina, but she’s still the country’s most powerful sex educator. The latest non-expert to give sex advice is Reverend Ed Young of the evangelical Fellowship Church in Grapevine, Texas. He recently called for a week of “congregational copulation” among married couples—sex with one’s spouse seven days…

Senator Ted Stevens: ‘Morality is About Sex, Not About Lying or Cheating’

I come not to praise Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, but to help bury him. Forget the $250,000 he’s been indicted for acquiring illegally. The guy stole billions—billions—of dollars by siphoning taxpayer money into a state that has 1/12 as many people as Los Angeles County. Think he sent Angelenos 8 times the money he sent Alaska? The rest of the Senate shares much of the blame for Stevens’ 40-year theft, voting for this guy’s unconscionably greedy appropriations year after year after year. When we hear how “powerful” a member of Congress is, it means that his/her colleagues have given him/her…

Family Research Council Caught Lying About Sexual Doomsday On Camera

Last night, ABC’s 20/20 explored whether or not there’s “too much” sex in American culture. Yes, I was featured on the show (playing the part of “expert-representing-truth-&-sanity”), but let’s skip over that for now. The Family Research Council’s Peter Sprigg gave his usual fact-free pitch about how “all that sex” is destroying America and its children. He spoke with sincere pain about noticing his son watching an episode of Desperate Housewives, which implied that characters were having sex off-camera. 20/20 invited us to wonder about the constant claim that sex in the media is bad for kids. As I’ve written…

Pharoah Lives—In The Hearts of Orthodox Jews

Greetings from Budapest, Hungary, where I’m lecturing for a few days. By coincidence it’s also Passover, which gave special meaning to my visit to the old Jewish Quarter here. I toured the famous Dohany Synagogue, the second largest in the world (after New York’s), along with several smaller ones. Done in various 19th century styles, one feature common to all is the physical separation of the genders—typically men downstairs, women upstairs. This separation continues today in modern Orthodox Judaism in America, Israel, and around the world. Some Orthodox Jewish men won’t shake hands with a woman from outside their family.…

Dear Pope: Support Life, Support Masturbation

The Pope has stepped forward to talk about the pain inflicted by priests who sexually exploited young parishioners, calling it “a wound on the body of Christ.” “No words of mine could describe the pain and harm inflicted by such abuse,” Benedict said today in Boston, vowing to eliminate such behavior from the priesthood. This, of course, is an important step. But with all due respect to the thousands of lives damaged by molesting priests, what about the tens of millions of lives damaged by the OTHER Catholic Church sex scandal—the profound condemnation of masturbation? This is the first sexual…
